I turned in my last assignment as a student a few hours ago.
As I told Adrian yesterday in an e-mail, I don't count qualifying exams and
the dissertation as homework, because they're my own research that I've
chosen and designed.
Homework is behind me.
Now I have to mark some papers and submit grades, and the semester is over.
After that, a couple of book reviews and some Pratchetty writing--that's
enough of a hint, but there's a book coming out next year (that I have a
hand in) that has to do with Discworld.

Grades just came back. I got two B+ grades this semester, by which I am not
best pleased, but I have finished my doctoral courses with a 3.789 GPA.
I guess that's okay with me.

As Lesley said, you've had a lot going on so the grades are by no means bad
- it's just that you set yourself such high standards.
Have no idea how good the GPA is though, as we don't have such things here
in Yukia.
So is the PhD official now or is it subject to verification? Have you
ordered your official letter head yet? I can picture it now.Thick creamy

Well, there's the small matter of four four-hour exams (19th Century
British, Modern SF, Victorian Women, Latin) and the dissertation. I'm a good
deal from done, but classes are behind me.

Do you get a grade for your PhD or just the PhD?
In the UK, there are grades for bachelor and masters degrees but not
PhD's. Also the PhD is marked on the disertation, they might be
compulsary modules that the university sets and you have to pass, but I
don't think it matter what grade you got as long as you pass.

In my opinion, the very concept of a grade point average should be
totally eradicated from all educational institutions by law.
Unfortunately, I don't have an empire, and cannot pass such laws. Put
simply, the problem is that the existence of the grade point average
as an officially recognised quantity promotes a culture of pretending
that a person's academic success can be summarised by a number, and
that's offensive. Eradicate the notion of a GPA, and you've taken the
first step to changing the culture.

Before you do that, get rid of the atrocious simplification called IQ.
The problem is that people are not very good at handling multi-factored
choices. So they want everything reduced to a single line, and an order,
if not a position, along that line.
And such simplification is not /totally/ stupid. Opposite neds of the
spectrum probably do represent different levels of ability. But the
signal has so much noise on it that single steps within most ranges are
essentially meaningless.

I don't know whether I agree with all of what you wrote, but the number I
got could be considered misleading in some ways. Looking at individual
courses reveals that I did well in literature and not as well in theory
classes.

How silly is it, from your university? I like the Scandinavian PhD. gear -
tails and a leprechaun's hat, but the best I've ever seen is from Barcelona
(I think - a Spanish university anyway); it's a robe with a voluminous
golden cape over the shoulders and a huge golden chrysanthemum for a hat.

I'd be sort of adrift without it.
It's hard to admit, but academic success is what others have always seemed
to appreciate about me. Sometimes, I see it as all I have to offer; I'm good
at being a student, and the GPA is how it's measured.

Yeah, but on the other hand, IQ doesn't have the same presige in our
culture that GPA does. Most people probably think of IQ as a number you
calculate from an article in a magazine, or something like that.

Right. And it's a convenience they're not entitled to.

What I advocate is that whatever number you choose to use to summarise
your academic success, you ought to have to state the derivation of
that number explicitely, every time you quote it. In other words, you
ought to be forced to type a looooong sentence instead, such as, "My
average exam score was 72%", or "I scored 80% or better on 50% of my
subjects", or whatever summary you choose.
Being able to simply say, "My GPA was 3.75" is a convenient shorthand
that you (or more to the point, people seeking to employ you) should
_NOT_ be entitled to. The fact that it's a named number gives it an
artificial sense of authority, and that's where the problem lies.
Adrian.

Oh yeah? I wouldn't risk calling the women around here "Mistress Stacie".
Obviously, things are different down south.

I think it depends on whether or not the woman in question is
actually named Stacie.

Nah, not really. Better to pretend you remembered her name wrong, than
obviously not having tried to remember her name at all.

But what on earth is artificial about it?
It is a numeric statement of how you did in your courses.
It does not pretend to be anything else.

Awwww -- you're no fun . . . I like IQ.
At almost 69 I have a measured IQ of 166, which means I have all the
mental ability of a 114 year old.

GPA, as far as I can tell, is a purely American thing. On the other hand,
the almighty dollar trumps both of them in the "how much people are

Wrong. Australian universities have GPA, too. Though I can't remember
whether ours is out of four or five.

I agree. While we're eradicating things, could we do away with
personality tests which give you a numerical score (or a sequence of
letters, which is nearly as bad)? If suggesting academic success can
be summerised by a number is offensive, then suggesting that
personality can be is even more so. OTOH, like IQ tests, these might
not really be taken seriously enough to be worth getting upset about.
In any case, congratulations to Stacie on receiving a _high_
offensively numerical score! Related to the issue of appropriate
terms of address, should I curtsey?

Curtseying is always correct behavior.
